The Intendant of New France
Jean Talon became the intendant of New France in 1665. He retired in 1668, only to take the position again in 1670. The Intendants job was to oversee the day- to- day work of government and general activity of the colony. The Intendant was responsible for ensuring that everybody paid their taxes. He also established a judicial system, helped the colony develop economically and encouraged the growth of the population.

He recommended Jean Talon because he thought Jean Talon was intelligent, brave, and that he could handle the job of Intendant.

Challenges for Jean Talon
Jean Talon was one of the most successful Intendants in the history of New France.
The job of Intendant of New France was a difficult job to fulfill. On his arrival in the colony Talon faced many challenges. Scurvy, smallpox and other diseases were killing many European settlers. Confrontations were common between European settlers and Aboriginal Peoples, some of whom saw the newcomers as intruders. The harsh climate also could make even basic survival a struggle. Yet, during Talon's time in the colony, the population of New France climbed from 3,200 to 7,600 .
